Umbraco 13: New kids on the Blocks

Here we look at the newly released Umbraco 13 which includes Blocks in the Rich Text Editor

The end of last year (2023) saw the introduction of Umbraco 13, the newest Long Term Supported (LTS) version of Umbraco CMS which the company calls ‘one of the most exciting Umbraco releases in years’.

The integration of .NET 8 in this new release comes alongside support for C# 12. This brings users improvements in memory management and performance scaling, while unlocking new language features.

While there’s lots to talk about regarding this latest release, here at Lake Solutions, we think the most significant introduction is Blocks in the Rich Text Editor. As an alternative to Macros, this allows for a more structured and dynamic content creation experience. It will make editing a much smoother process, while offering content managers a user-friendly solution with more flexibility.

It means that editors can drop elements, such as video, image galleries and text blocks, with ease onto a page. As the company explains ‘as we plan for more block functionality in Umbraco in general - including global blocks as reusable content - this is a natural step that aligns with how you work with Umbraco’.

Also included in the Umbraco 13 release are:

* Webhooks: A new headless, no-code/low-code feature which allows editors to do seamless integration with third-party systems.
* Nested field limiting and nested field expansion: Umbraco 13 offers nested field limiting and nested field expansion for the Content Delivery API.
* Minimal Hosting Model: Simplifies application initiation, aligning with Microsoft's latest standards.
* Enhanced Media Delivery API: Improved headless media delivery with necessary breaking changes for a more efficient media experience.
* Concurrent Log-in Control: This new security option prevents multiple simultaneous log-ins.
* New Log-in Screen: Offering a refreshed look and feel, as well as a log-in experience built on the latest technology (which will give you a sneak insight into Umbraco 14).
* Maintenance page: With a new fully customisable maintenance page, you'll have a simple way to show if your site is ‘under maintenance’. You can also choose to continue showing your website while Umbraco is in upgrade mode.
